Hi!  I'm Rebecca! Wife to Mr. Green Gables Lane, and mom of two sons.

Once upon a time (2013, actually), I was making lip balm as holiday gifts.  I purchased essential oils from my local co-op health food store, thinking that if it was in a health food store, it had to be healthy, right?  Apparently not.  During my project, I  noticed the label on the peppermint essential oil said "100% Pure", followed by "Do Not Ingest".  Big debate....should I use it to my DIY holiday gift lip balm recipe?  I decided not to. There had to be something that was toxic and/or synthetic in this essential oil.  Frustrated, my Christmas gift project went on hold.

Since then, I have found out that it is only required by the FDA to have 5% minimum of the actual plant essential oil in the bottle,  to be considered 100% pure.  (Yep, that doesn't make sense to me either). Essential Oils are loosely controlled by the ones who dictate such things, so I had to research companies to find a company that did better than 5% on.their.own.  I had to find a company that I could trust to not add synthetic additives to their essential oils.  A company that would test their products for the highest possible standard.

A few weeks later, a friend told me about oils that were so pure they could be ingested. Young Living Oils are 100% Pure....REALLY Pure. They have a Seed-to-Seal Promise.  This means that Young Living has their own their own farms, plants their own seeds, cultivates, distills (once, not five or six times, so the oil is diluted), test, bottle and seal.  In fact, they grow their Essential Oils in compost and utilize red worms to give liquid fertilizer and castings for soil.  Fields are sprayed with natural herbicide made with their own essential oils, neem and castile.  That is a step further than organic!  I was intrigued.   (Since then I've been able to visit the Young Living fields of Lavender, and Hyssop, and Clary Sage. An impressive experience!  You can, too.  Drop by their farms.  Young Living has an open door policy!)

Let me tell you about purity in essential oils.   Grade A essential oils are therapeutic, made from organically grown plants and distilled at low temperatures.  Grade B are food grade but may contain synthetics, pesticides, fertilizers, chemical extenders or carrier oils. (Considering how much plant goes into a bottle of essential oil, this scares me!)  Grade C are perfume oils that often contain adulterating chemicals.  Typically this includes solvents, like hexane, to gain a higher yield of oil per harvest.  Solvents can be cancerous and are in many store-bought oils.  They may be diluted 80-95% with alcohol.  (This is what I originally wasted my money on at the health food store for my DIY lip balm.  YUCK!)  Grade D is called 'floral water', which is aromatic only and is usually a byproducts of Grade A distillation.  After all the oil is pulled out, the leftover trash water is sold to companies which will fill 5% of the bottle with 'leftover trash water', fill the rest with carriers and label it "100% Pure".   Grade A is the only true pure oil. Because the FDA so loosely controls essential oils, the companies that use solvents, chemicals, additives, etc. aren't required to identify this on the bottle label.  This is where company integrity becomes super important.  Young Living is Grade A.  They test their oils. If it doesn't meet their high standards, it doesn't even make it to the 3rd party testing.  Young Living holds their standards high.  Why would you want anything less?  If you are going the extra step of using an oil to get away from a chemical, you want to get the real thing.  Anything less is a waste of money.  Before you buy essential oils, check to see if the company grows their own plants, owns their own fields, and controls the entire process from Seed to Seal...that means from the farm and seed to the sealed bottle. After all, you wouldn't pour yourself a cup of orange juice and then dilute it 95% before you drink it.  It wouldn't give you the benefits of the orange juice. Why would you do that with essential oils?   You'll have wonderful benefits to keep you above the wellness line if you have real, pure oils.  You can see Young Living's Seed to Seal process here.  It's not just a slogan, it's a promise.

After a quick how-to meeting on Young Living Essential Oils, I was completely hooked.  We ordered the Premium Starter Kit with a Dew Drop Diffuser, a well-rounded new 'toolbox' of sorts.  $160 for the kit, which included a diffuser, oils, samples, how-to information.  I immediately used our oils on everyone in sight, even our fur babies!  With this kit, I was fully equipped!  Simple to learn.
